World Experts to Build City's New Health Service Facilities

Selecting the company who will build the City’s new hospital is a step closer.

Three companies who were in the running to build the new hospital, mental health unit and integrated care centre – as part of the Greater Peterborough Health Investment Plan - have been narrowed down to two.

The two successful consortia are MediCo and Progress Health. Both consortia bring a wealth of experience in building hospitals across the world and were selected following a thorough evaluation of the three initial designs presented for the new facilities.

The announcement marks the start of the next stage in the Health Investment Plan and the two consortia will now work over the next nine months with staff from all areas of the local NHS to develop their detailed designs for the new buildings.

Announcing the results of the selection process, Chris Banks, Chief Executive of the Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said: “I am delighted to announce that MediCo and Progress Health have been short-listed to work with the NHS locally to develop the plans for our new hospital and other facilities.

“Both consortia have worked well with us and have produced some very exciting design proposals.” Richard Taylor, Chief Executive of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust said: “This is an important milestone in a very exciting project. We have today moved a step closer to providing the people of Peterborough with modern health care facilities of the highest quality.”

Commenting on the project, Chris Town, Chief Executive of the Greater Peterborough Primary Care Partnership said: “The Health Investment Plan is not just about buildings and will bring a number of other benefits to the City. There will be employment opportunities during the construction phase and when the new facilities open we will need more doctors, nurses and other staff to care for our rapidly growing population providing employment and training opportunities for local people.”

A spokesman for Progress Health said: ”Progress Health welcomes the opportunity to continue to be a key partner in the realisation of the Health Investment Plan. Working closely with the Trusts’ team Progress Health is committed to optimising the design solutions in conjunction with the stated aim of improving healthcare for the community.”

Commenting in response to their appointment a member of the Medico team said: “MediCo looks forward to further developing innovative ways of providing a new healthcare environment, supporting the Trusts’ aim of delivering clinical excellence. The openness and vision of the trusts has enabled MediCo to design an exciting health campus that satisfies our shared ambition to provide flexible solutions for a sustainable health economy for the long-term benefit of the people of Peterborough.”
